You have heard the saying; aging is not for the weak-hearted. As we and our loved ones age, new challenges arise. It can all be overwhelming, especially when health and memory issues arise or when caregiving becomes more demanding.
Fortunately, our community offers many resources but finding them can be difficult.
What if you could get all your answers in one place? And get them without paying a fee? Well, there is such a wonderful place; it is the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). As the name suggests, their services are for those over 60 years old and folks who are disabled. They are in every county of Wisconsin, and each has many similar programs. I chatted with Amie Bastian, Manager of Outagamie County’s ADRC. I asked her to give us a baker’s dozen list of just some of the things they help folks with.
- If you cannot drive anymore, they have specialized transportation.
- Looking for ways to keep your body strong? They have prevention programs like Strong Bodies, Falls Prevention and Tai Chi.
- They can help you with Power of Attorney and Guardianship. Get them in place, now, when the choices are yours.
- Hungry? They can help you with meal opportunities in a community setting (a terrific way to connect with others) or with home-delivered meals, and food pantries.
- If you are dazed by the options for Medicaid/Medicare, they have Elder and Disability Benefit Specialists to help you with your best choice.
- Perhaps you are dealing with dementia issues. There is a Dementia Care Specialist, ready to support individuals and caregivers. They also run Memory Cafés and “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” classes.
- Questioning you elder rights – yes, they have someone for that.
- They can help you with housing options. They know about all the local senior communities from independent living to assisted living to nursing care. They can share what options fit in with your financial abilities along with your health needs.
- They know about homecare and respite options. They have a list of help you can hire, with discounted services: snow removal, haircuts, foot care, gutter cleanout, etc.
- If you are feeling isolated and lonely, they have programs like congregate meals and Elder Match Program.

- If you want to stay in your home and need help with modifications, they have that, too.
- Need to share experiences with someone going through the same things you are? They can connect you with a multitude of support groups.
